           Many employees have found themselves working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many workers will find themselves working from home permanently. Some laws require your employer to pay for work-related expenses incurred at home. In this post, I will share some expenses that your employer should cater to if you work from home.

Internet Access

Working from home cannot be possible without a reliable internet connection. Internet helps you in many ways. While you work from home, you need to connect with colleagues and share the progress of projects. To add, much software that is used to work on tasks requires an internet connection.

To access a self-service portal, that helps you access your company information and update your personal information, an internet connection is a must. As you work from home, you are required to share data with team members, which is not possible without an internet connection.

Telephone Charges

At work, whether home or the office, communication is essential. For managers, they have to communicate when assigning tasks and when checking the progress of projects. For workers, you have to communicate with team members to share knowledge and help each other where necessary.

Some communication must be done through the telephone. Telephone calls are sometimes the most efficient and fastest way to reach someone. You can call a colleague to ask for assistance or the manager can call to request you to submit work. All the charges used in calls should be paid for by the employer.

Some software used at remote work is paid for monthly. An example is Zoom. Some of this software is very important to enable remote workers to connect to the office and colleagues. If everything was done at the office and everyone reported there for work, some of this software would not be required. As a worker, you are not responsible for such subscriptions. Your employer should pay to enable easier connection and holding of meetings.

You need a home office to work effectively at home. Working from your favorite sofa or bed can make you less productive. A good home office should include a chair and a desk. In the same way that you don’t buy yourself a desk at the office, it should be the same case at home. An employer is responsible for buying your office equipment to enable you to work effectively. These are equipment that is used for creating a home office used for work.

A Work Computer

 It is a computer that runs all software used at work. It is an essential gadget that must be applied in remote work. With a computer, you log in to meet with colleagues, receive assignments, submit tasks and also send invoices. Without a computer, remote work can be very challenging. That is why your employer should get you an updated and modern computer. It should be situated at your home office and used for work purposes only. Other personal uses like social media should be restricted from access to the work computer.

Printer and Printing Materials

Printing documents is an inevitable activity at work. Documents act as to prove to contracts and agreements. When onboarding new employees documents are also used. There is all kind of letters that are written in an organization. For instance, letters for welcoming workers, terminating, sending requests, and also suggestions of workers. All these documents require papers to write on. For printed ones, you need a printer. As you work from home, your organization or your employer should provide these papers and a printer. That is, depending on the amount of paperwork and printing you do at your job.

Postage

Paperwork and documents cannot be sent through mail or the internet, but are sent through the post office. At the post office, there are charges incurred. At the post office, you pay depending on the weight of your parcel and the distance between you and your office. You can choose the type of service by the amount you are ready to pay. The faster you want your parcel delivered the more money you pay. The charges paid at the post office should be paid by your employer.

Travel Expenses

While working from home, you might need to travel on work-related issues. For example, going to the post office to send documents or an urgent meeting at the office. In other cases, you have to travel to the location of clients. If you are using public transport, the organization must give you the required fee. If you have a personal car, the amount of fuel used must also be compensated by your employer.

Home Utilities

An example of home utilities includes heat or air conditioning. In some locations, there are extreme weather conditions like too much cold or hot temperature. As an important asset to an organization, your employer should ensure you are comfortable and in the best state to do your job. In the case of extreme weather conditions, you need heat or air conditioning to be fully productive while doing your job.

Health Expenses

To be fully productive at work you must be healthy. Being healthy includes your mental and physical health. As you work from home, you should have insurance cover for your health in case of sickness. This insurance cover should be paid by your employer.

However, some policies determine which work-related expenses are covered by your employer. For equipment that is paid for by the employer, it is still the property of the organization, and once you leave your job you have to return that property.
